LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor,
You may be interested to know that with further reference to your information on the cover artist Pat Buckle, sent in by Frances Bartlett, I was the Editor of the CA Magazine at the time. Pat was already producing a different cover for the previous Editor, Keith Jones, when I took the job on. We are talking about the mid 70s and you might like to know that at the time the CA was having difficulty in finding helpers. So much so that one month Keith Jones had to sound out a similar warning to your to the effect that the CA would have to close if committee volunteers did not come forward.
As Editor there were many occasions that I did the cover designs myself as well and in fact I did one showing what the Centre would look like when it was built. I first met Pat Buckle in 1973 at the wonderful Winterbourne Festival (what a shame we didn't have one for the Millennium).
When Pat first started doing the covers for me as Editor they used to be done on the old fashioned Gestetner linen stencil - what a chore! I believe it was in 1980 that Pat produced the present design cover and we were fortunate enough to have the help of a Mr Dane who lived in Crossman Avenue, who cut an electronic stencil for us. That was a godsend because Pat no longer had to laboriously cut a stencil each month.
I and the CA have a great deal to thank Pat Buckle for - it's a wonderful design incorporating virtually every recognisable Winterbourne feature and I'm very glad that it has been decided to keep it.
My stint as Editor lasted seven years and though there were times when she must have got fed up with me pestering her before the present cover was designed, Pat never refused to help me, so I would like to add my thanks to Frances Bartlett's tribute.
Yours sincerely,
Peter Parker
Kathleen Marsh has also sent a tribute to Pat. Adding to what Peter has said, she says "The stress on Pat Buckle to compile the original artwork each month was becoming intolerable, and so it was decided, after ten years hard work, the standard masterpiece as used today was produced by Pat. I for one am delighted you are going to retain it".
Kathleen also wonders who drew the "big eye" for the "New Look" as the Magazine was once called. Does anybody know? Was it perhaps you, Peter?
